or 6 bucks for a CFL at the grocery store, check with your local utility company to
see if they have a rebate or give away program going. Most utilities are subsidizing CFL
bulbs now so take advantage of the savings.
If you don't have the money to change your bulbs, then the next best way to save on
your electric bill is to TURN OFF the lights. Simple to do, but most of us don't think about it. We're too
busy worrying about other stuff. And it's not like we're talking about leaving a single bulb in a lamp on
because most rooms have multiple fixtures -- which means lots
of burning bulbs and wasted energy.
Think about it. Do you leave your car engine on in the garage or parking lot? No.
Turning off lights is a great memory tool. Every time you flick that switch, you just might remind yourself
of the 101 other things you've completely forgotten about.
TURNING OFF lights raises your green I.Q. and puts money in your pocket.
Eco Tip: You want the sun to heat your house when it's cold. When you leave for work in the
morning, don't forget to open the shades or drapes. Make the sun your partner and let it keep your
house warm while you're at the office making money to pay your utility bills.
And, don't forget to make sure your fireplace flue is closed, too. The hot air that's trapped in
your house will go up and out your chimney.
There's an old saying "it takes money to make money." Well, sometimes it takes spending
money to save money. Here's your chance to spend a little on things that pay off:
Insulation works. Insulate your attic, your walls, anything that leaks.
Weather strip your windows and doors. It will save you money in the winter by keeping
the cold out, and in the summer by keeping the expensive air conditioned cool in.
After you buy the ELECTRONIC THERMOSTAT make sure you don't leave the heat or
the air conditioning on when you leave the house. It's like leaving the car engine on when
you're shopping. Makes no sense, right?
